offsets help!

im trying to change the FoV with this offset: 64_ship.exe+A854240 (float) but seems to crash every time i change it...
i have only been coding for about 2 month (in cheat engine) and am trying to learn vb.net
i dont know whats the problem is.
to someone with beter coding skills: halp!
