Controller support

If you clicked on this thread hoping to see a picture or video of it in action, well, it's in very early development right now, but I'm trying to add controller support to the Seraphs Dominion source.

What do you guys think of this? Is it a good idea? How should controls be optimized for the best gameplay?
I have some plans for it, but I'd like to hear opinions and ideas from others.

I mean assuming this would take you a bit of time to implement... would the time it take to add it be worth having it?

Doesn't really matter how long it takes to implement. Once I implement it once, it can be implemented a lot quicker the second time if I need to, so either way I'd consider it worth it. I just want it to exist.

I'm in no rush to finish it, I just became obsessed with controllers once I finally got mine, and I got hooked on the idea of possible controller support in RotMG. Naturally I rushed to the Seraphs Dominion client and started on it.

Yeah I'd say go for it. If you want to put your time into because that's something you like, go ahead.

Why not to make RotMG for consoles?Sell it to Kablem > PROFIT!!!

Well you can use a USB Xbox controller and make/download a mapper for the keys. I knew someone that used controllers on prod.

I know you can do that, but I want to make something more official.
Also I don't want to have to simulate mouse movements in any way, everything that required mouse movements is going to have new code written just for controller support.

For example, you press a button to toggle inventory management mode, and you use the right analog stick to move your selection box, press A to pick up, place down, or swap the item, press B to drop the item, and press X to use the item.

I made a sort of "controller support plan" in my free time, trying to fit together all the necessary and useful functions of rotmg into controller controls. It doesn't seem too bad to have, except abilities might NEED to have autoaim, if I want it to stay away from mouse simulation.

Erm, back when I was using Emulators I used a program called Joy2Key that converts your controller'a buttons to keyboard or mouse.

Also, finally got the actual controller recognition done in the client and added some basic controls:

Um, this game was made for the computer... and knowing that, computer controls will give it best gameplay.
Anything else is just utter stupidity at it's finest.

Yeah, it might seem that way, but so far it feels just fine playing with a controller. Of course computer controls will be better, but controller controls can at least be decent. Controllers are more fun to use.

Also, I played through the entirety of dark souls with a keyboard and mouse. Now that's what I call utter stupidity. I might just have a high tolerance for any bad controls after dealing with that horrible excuse of a PC port.

True, but I wouldn't see the majority of people switching to controller gameplay, due to everyone wanting anything they can get their hands and and will do anything to do it...
So to do that they will need best game play hence, the keyboard aspect.

So I literally see no logical sense in this idea besides developing your coding abilities to different areas. In which this case, good job. I'm far to lazy to even want to do this, yet alone think about it.

Yeah, I understand that's how most people are. At the very least I'm making myself happy with being able to play rotmg with a controller.

But other than that, you're pretty much spot-on with one of my biggest reasons for doing this. I don't see myself being able to make any proper games in the future if I can't make proper controller support. I'm also surprised myself that I'm not too lazy to do this.

I wouldn't call wanting to use a controller for a game stupid. If I wanted to play a computer game while sitting on the couch, I would definitely opt for a controller over keyboard & mouse combo...

Anyways, there is some value to having controller support as it can change the whole feel of a game. For instance, having access to analog sticks allows one to easily program in adjustable movement speed.
