Would suggest you write what you are needing.
Often phpbb has a addon already created which suits peeps' needed functions, and as long as you are using the newest version, should have no problem dropping it in. phpbb2, was fun fun to work on tho, lol. At one point I think I had 20-25 addons on 5 different skins. It was a heck of a learning experience.
