If it is recent, say a year or two, Just go psycho on him. Beat his ass.
If you get in trouble, act like your mom's death has had a HUGE traumatical impact on you and that when he makes fun of your mom, that you tried to "mask" it and that it eventually lead up to you beating his ass. And that you tried to contain yourself but it just got to the point where BOOM. And if they say "you could have just told on him", say that it wouldn't have mattered, he is an imbecile and that he would have just done it again anyway.
