I don't see why this is a bad thing. Compared to a functional and fixed prod AS3 client, I still prefer the old one. 123.5.1 is a perfect version, it has a lot of features and almost none of Kabam's shitting on the game. I'm not even lying when I say that the older the client, the more you can do with it. Hardware acceleration and tabs/backpacks? Cool. Those are the only things I care about past 123.5.1. If I tried, I could add backpacks into the 123.5.1 AS3 client. I already added tabs. If I look through the newer AS3 code, I'd say something around that level of difficulty seems near impossible to do. Kabam completely rewrote the client, which so far only seems to make me feel restricted, and too many of the things changed just make the game feel ruined in my opinion. Pets, fuck you. All the annoying bugs which DON'T HAPPEN in the OLDER CLIENT because they were BUGS that KABAM ADDED, fuck you. They hardly added anything useful, but they didn't have any trouble fucking up the game's quality. I'm surprised anyone who cares about quality in a game still plays RotMG.
I'm really stressed about having to switch over to the new prod client for development of a certain server. It doesn't feel right. I don't feel like I can let my imagination go wild and try out a bunch of random things to add to the server in an attempt to make it unique and creative. I feel like I've just stepped out of a large open room and ended up in an endless messy hallway, trying not to trip on all the big piles of trash. I'm stressed as I'm typing this, and I've been stressed ever since I looked at the AS3 prod client. (Wow, for once my MPGH mood can actually match my mood!) I just feel like turning back and never associating myself with a prod client ever again.
Basically, the 123.5.1 client is superior to the prod client in every way I can think of except for tabs and hardware acceleration. The bad outweighs the good. However, the "stone age" thing you brought up has nothing to do with the version of RotMG the server is based off of. RotMG servers will forever be in a stone age until AS3 clients (specifically Kithio's) are fully utilized to create interesting and unique servers, and when a stable server source is used (specifically creepylava's) that hasn't been ruined beyond repair by MMOE/Phoenix. People are too stubborn to realize what's good for a server and what's bad. If you make a server, it's not gonna be good just because you have a good source. You gotta know how to make it unique and interesting without forgetting that the source is fragile and should be handled with care. Once more people understand this, servers will no longer be stuck in the stone age. However, if the source you're using has permanent cracks in it, it's not even worth using or fixing.
