Internet Help
So here's my problem. I got new internet about 2 weeks ago that has a 180 mb/s download speed which is pretty decent. I had a spare router around so I opted to use that instead of renting one of theirs.

The router is the SURFboard SBG6580

So when I'm directly connected to my PC ( PC to Router) the internet speed is at 180 mb/s but when I'm on my laptop its around 2 mb/s

However, when I bring my laptop up close to the router the speed increases to around 80 mb/s which is enough for my needs.

On the flip side, if I literally just walk 5 or so feet away from the router my speed instantly drops to around 2 mb/s

I am convinced that the router I have complete shit is obviously not built for a wireless connection ( Can anyone confirm this? )

So that leaves me with two options: Buy another router or set up a wired Ethernet connection around my house. The problem with the second option is I have no idea how to do that...

Does anybody know how I can set up a Ethernet connection from the ports?

I've tried plugging to router to the Ethernet port and then going to another port and plugging a different cable directly to my laptop but that didn't work.

Any ideas?

The router you are using probably has a defected transmitter which explains the speed changes, also only some ports may work for the ethernet connection which is what my problem is but I use everything with wifi. Try plugging it into the original port that the person from your provider came in and set it up and if that doesn't work you might have to call your provider and they could probably set it up for you.

That is the one thing I'm dreading is calling my provider since its Comcast

Maybe try testing out one of you're friend's routers or a neighbour's?
If it still changes the speed there might just be something wrong with the laptop, especially if its a couple of years old then the receiver is probably disfunctioning or drawing to the end of its life.

If everything else fails just call em'.

The router is prob a year old anyways

There are some routers just built for gaming and wireless connections so I might get one of those. The ASUS ones look nice...

ASUS routers are great, especially if you get a higher-end one. I have one and I like it a lot.

Test out someone else's router just to make sure its not your laptop or the connection because trust me better to know what the problem is before you go spend money.

Its not my laptop

I've used it before with different WiFi and I've been able to get a solid 200 mb/s connection on it.

Its only a year old Macbook so I don't think its my laptop

Which one do you have?

I'm looking at a list of the best wireless routers of 2015 and the ASUS ones are around $250 but specs are amazing

Buy a new router from amazon and check if it's the router. If it's not the router then return the router.

Wireless if possible. At most I'm only going to have one wired connection for my main PC, the rest are my laptops and consoles.
