I find I can't smudge inward on a transparent part of a layer. That's irritating.

aha, CS4 portable is fine, i've used it without anything going wrong, cept slow loading with shit ass comp, so if your comp is fast then, go for what u like aha
CS5's smudging is bullshit. They've gone user/noob-friendly over full flexibility.
