Some optional programs you can use are WinRAR and, my favorite, 7zip. If you just want to open a .rar file, go to http://www.7-zip.org and download the 7-Zip files (choose 32-bit or 64-bit) as the .exe. Then, run the installer (.exe file) and extract the files into the default folder. As long as the files are all on your computer, you are all set. Then, you can right-click on any .rar files and choose the option: 7-Zip/Extract to folder, and then set a directory for the .rar file to unpack too. After that, open the folder, and voila!
