hmm, if one of the most technology advanced country is filled with mostly atheists, does that say something about religion holding back?
Today, about 2.3% of the world's population describes itself as atheist, while a further 11.9% is described as nonreligious. Between 64% and 65% of Japanese are atheists, agnostics, or do not believe in God.
Japan currently has "26 suicides per 100,000 people." This is the highest suicide rate in the industrialized world. Atheism = SUICIDE
As paroxysm just pointed out, religion doesn't have much to do with their technological superiority. They just have a very fucked up culture and way of life (and that's what helped them achieve their success and also what causes all the suicides).

That's relative, not an absolute amount. Hence, it doesn't matter how big or small the population is
It doesn't matter what the population is because it's the ratio that matters hurr derp
Please look up the lyrics in my signature if you believe in this "God" bullshit.
