Why would a social media website like facebook pick up a project(that might boost gaming significantly) like the Oculus Rift?

Another company lost oh well didnt have that high hopes for them really with the fact sony and several other companys are and have been working on the same technology for some years now

Not sure why Facebook is getting hated on, Oculus actually has 'somewhat' of a chance to compete with other competitors that are now looking into this type of project (Sony). Sure, Facebook might do stuff like integrate Facebook and Instagram but hey, they're at least doing something. When it comes out (if it does) and it sucks ass, then buy it. Just please don't be one of those fucking hypocrites who start worshiping it if it turns out good.

I know some things about it, and of it. But I mean come on, with all of the money Facebook has, there's nothing stopping them from creating their own console (despite fear of competition with Microsoft and Sony) and being able to integrate things they want (Facebook and Instagram) therefore generating more revenue. I'm not sure if I'm making sense but hopefully you know what I'm getting at. I guess that's what I meant by integrating FB and IG.
