had a nokia XpressMusic (the old one/first one) dropped it from the 3rd floor of my building got a little scratch on it's back but didn't even shutdown.

I've dropped my iPhone 4S many times without a protective case on it. It's still fine.
That may not be the case for everyone, but if you just take care of your shit you won't have this problem.

And by taking care of it, I mean buy an OtterBox. I was over at a friend's when I first put an OtterBox on my phone. The second I snapped the case together he slapped it out of my hand and it went flying across the room into his TV. Shattered his TV, but my phone was perfectly fine.
