For actual life, go Second Life, or the Sims series (all of them)

For FPS go ARMA or ARMA2 or if you like WWII then go Red Orchestra

For building games go Cities XL, or better yet, go oldschool and go for the entire Simcity series except for societies.

For racing go GT2/GT4 (GT5 was a let down for me), Colin McRae Rally, or GRiD
