Crossfire Client Error MFC

hi my friend hasnt been able to play crossfire in like a month. he rebuilt his computer from scratch cuz of all the crap he had in it. he has a illegal copy of windows xp which he says he cant update the service pack in. whenever he tries loading up crossfire, it gets past xtrap and HGWC then when it supposed to load, it says "CLIENT MFC APPLICATION ERROR" or something. we downloaded the game onto his laptop and it worked, but when we moved the files to his computer, we still got the same error. is it becuz his sp pack is 1? or is it something wrong with his computer. hes DYING to play. please help with any suggestions.
oh btw yes we did update with the new patch it still didnt work.
