I think as far as anime is concerned ,its best to start with movies by the best directors, like Satoshi Ken or Miyazaki. try perfect blue, paprika, Castle in the Sky, Dog of Flanders, or Spirited away. And absolutely Akira---Watch Akira. Check out a few top 10 lists online and see who keeps repeating on those lists.
