8700k seems a solid choice

I would gon with a AMD RYZEN 5 2600
Is a very well balanced CPU for multitasking.

If it's not gonna be a super AI intensive game such as Skyrim or anything with many NPCs, then hyperthreading won't be too much of an added benefit.

simple answer for simple question is i9-9900k, because you get highest performance on one core.

But i recomend i5-9600k, because is much cheaper and has great value price vs performance.

In speech numbers for example on passmark.com i9 2900 points on simple core vs i5 2681p vs Ryzen 7 2700X 2193. (Dont buy AMD when you play games only!!! - this CPU dont have good performance on one core)

Don't listen to the other guy, passmark isn't even a gaming benchmark. AMD Zen architecture is great for gaming and multitasking, just wait for Zen 2 it's going to beat Intel's pants off, especially now that all pre-9th gen Intels loose 15%-25% performance thanks to Zombieload.

cpus are general purpose so really any cpu can be used for gaming purpose. if you are asking for a modern cpu recommendation for gaming there are really only two choices. cpus made by intel or amd. If you want pure top tier performance and money is not an issue, get an Intel processor something like an 9700k or 9900k is high end. The many security flaw patches don't really affect performance at all for most people. If you don't mind having something slower like maybe 15%~ less on avg, but has more value for the dollar get a Ryzen processor. "Multitasking" isn't a real problem that Ryzen handles better. I believe what people mean is that on tasks that use multiple processor cores Ryzen presents more performance per dollar as you can get more multi threaded performance at the same price point compared to an intel equivalent. Both are great. Intel would probably be my go to. Cheers.

Intel is way more expensive

intel is purely for gaming but amd works for both, amd is cheaper and i prefer amd, especially ryzen, used intel for 5 years and after i tried amd, amd forever
