wacom bamboos are cheap around $100
intuos arent, more like 300-400, depending on model

I honestly don't think you need to buy one unless you really want to go somewhere with this.
In other words, try to improve more before you put money into this.
That way you know you aren't wasting money.
And even then, the only people I know of in this section are me, Doc, and Energy.
And I only got one because it makes my style easier with all the pentool and 1-2px brushing I do.

I have a feeling a lot of the people that want them are /b/tards trying to get in on the drawing/ sketching threads.

My friend speed paints/draws/sketches/photoshops for a living, and he started with the bamboo... now he's got some crazy ass expensive one, but the bamboo is a nice starting tablet.
