Suggestions for a New OS

im looking for a free OS to overwrite my xp sp2. because im tired of it...
what should i get? i have:
Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2050 @ 1.60GHz (2 CPUs)
Video Card: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
Sound Card: NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio
Manufacturer: Dell
Current OS: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp.050622-1524)

im thinking id like a linux, but i looked through their database and they arent very descriptive...
im looking for something that can run microsoft programs (like media player)
and something thats neat looking at the same time

userfriendly is always nice, too.

open for suggestions!

there are so many distro's of linux i dont know what to recommend, if you ubuntu is probably the most supported version out there right now, and with linux you can have linux and windows installed on the same drive without reformatting (although it resizes your partition). Gourav i doubt you'd have much fun using linux because everything you install has to be done with .tar commands through terminal so like have fun doing that kind of shit, i just uninstalled my linux distro last night because i never use it (PclinuxOS 2007)

i was thinking ubuntu but the whole tar thing, like you said is a drag =\
which is why i made the thread, ubuntu is on my maybe list. anyone else?

Well, Ubuntu has a really nice interface, and its vary neat. It doesn't run well with windows application, and I tried to get uninstallation support from them, it took years for them to reply. There forums are active and supportive for everything else though. If you really want to. Thats only if you would rather neatness over power.

well as you can see by my specs i dont really have much power anyways =P so neatness is kinda what im looking for...

i have no clue whats going on because doubleganger has really good grammer and spelling all of the sudden, BUT his ips correspond to your/his main account gourav2122, now your ip on your account doesnt correspond at all, first off its a different ip from both accounts and second, its not even from the same ISP, gourav and double ganger resolve to verizon, while your ip resolves to comcast

you can search for backtrack 3. you dont have too install it so you can just boot it from a cd.

and rasterburn said he is getting diffrent OS cuz his disks .iso he has are around 700 mb.. but the os was more.. so he can't do that..
