I asked because if you try and obtain a handle from within visual Studio while debugging it will return null because its not allowed. Which would fit with the problem he is having. That being a variable not having a value when it should.

Uhm, incorrect, you can obtain handles from processes by either the OpenProcess API or the "Handle" property in the Process class. Either one works in debug mode.
