I am fairly sure they are a requirement unless something has changed over the past year.

If you do go over a post limit. It always will equal a longer ban

Aff postbans are to prevent users from exceeding daves post count, He created the system solely for that purpose, Skipping a post ban = Dave rages = Ban for a long time.

Of course it isn't required..
