Can someone explain to me what this about? What's the significance if it passes? I've looked it up, but really still don't have the concept of what it has to hold.

Its a lighter version of ACTA.

The (SOPA) act otherwise known as "stop online piracy act" is a complete violation of how we choose to browse the internet.
Sites you browse daily,could be blocked.
Email providers may be forced to censor certain links you send or receive.
The links you share on social networks such as facebook will be closely monitored and possibly censored.

Basically it gives the goverment the abbility to force sites down that have copy written material on it. The scary part is that you're giving up power to the goverment. Power that could be advanced on and basically controle a large portion of the worlds information exchange.

It gives the US government clearance to shut down websites with pirated content or trademarked content. This pretty much kills the first amendment and the freedom that the internet offers. Many companies can lose their business like Facebook, Google, and Wikipedia because they have tons of trademarked content and pictures that belong to the respective companies. It will also block websites from the US if they include pirated content so its pretty much acting like the Great Firewall of China

All you need to know is that if it passes sites like Youtube, Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. will all be taken down.
