[Help] BF3 problem

When i try to play with my friends on battlefield 3 (XBox 360) it wont let me.
If i try to join them while they are in game it says check my connection (but i can join games on my own)
If i try to join a squad (or invite my friend to a squad) it says invitation not available.
What should i do?

my friend didn't install the 2 gb update
he hasn't finished the update so we haven't tried that yet.

My friend and i fixed it, it was the update.
