I think it was,set desktop resolution to lowest,ingame to 800*600
then while in a game or loading screen set desktop resolution back to 1440*900 or higher

Why wouldn't you want full screen?

If you want, on most graphics cards you can choose to "Preserve aspect ratio" which will give you the black bars at the sides

Open up your graphics control center, and there should be a setting called "Preserve Aspect Ratio" or something similar. That will let you play CF with the black bars on the sides.

Hmmm, i am afraid talking about you already know, so i'm thinking here that my solution is not really what you want, but anyways:

go to Options when in lobby and put in the window mode.
