Consider for each device compiled, you need a good number of software engineers to write the corresponding driver in a timely matter. Software Engineers also participate in really any major advancement. Windows 7, new windows 8 (already in development), Macintosh, Redhat linux(one of the few profitable distributions of linux), any new gaming consoles, and new portable devices(Cell phones, Ipod's ITouches). It's an interesting job as well.
