If you are getting a white flashing cursor in the upper left corner, then your monitor is working. and its not a problem with your graphics adapter. It's most likely a problem caused with your motherboard.

As the user stated above, it seems to not be an issue with the Operating System but the computer itself.
You can try entering the BIOS menu and resetting everything to default and restarting. Without any computer knowledge I'd recommend not try anything else as you could mess it up further.

Just let it sit over-night, try it in the morning again and if the problem persists then you're better off calling geek squad.

The Geek Squad are professionals..
You need to be certified as well as have a license to even be hired for lower-level spots.

Anyways, headsup.
Do you have your Operating System's installation disk?

Start up disk, Go for the Reformat trick.

Instead of reformatting, boot via the startup discs, run the repair diagnostics and see what pops up.

When you start your computer, press the button (you said F12) that gets you into BIOS. Double check that it detects your processor and it's speed, the RAM amount, any optical drives you have (cd-rom, dvd-burner etc), and your hard disks (and their capacities).

If everything is detected right then I imagine one of two possible scenarios:

1) The boot file has become corrupt, and therefore doesn't tell your computer to load windows (this is possible to fix); or
2) An error has occurred rendering your XP installation obsolete (hard drive failure, corrupt data, etc...).

I had the first problem that xplicitt stated. Easy fix. Hope it's something easy like that.

Also , check your IDU cables. They may be loose.
sounds dumb but it happens a lot
