Which Language to Learn?
I'm looking for an all-round language to learn. I got into C++ for a bit but then I've had a friend tell me it's going to be useless soon or something and that C# was the better choice. Which programming language would be the best to do pretty much anything? Like make hacks for games, create programs (bots, auto registering bots or something, etc.), game design-ish, and stuff. So I guess this would kind of be like a C++ vs C# :P

Edit: If you can, can you guys like explain to me what both C++ and C# are for and which you would learn?
C++ being useless? I bet your friend is awesome at coding.. ._.

Learn C#.
Both can achieve the same.

He learned C# and he told me something about C++ not being viable anymore :P

He is an hater. Yet, go C# ; )
Learn C#.
.
Both are really essential. C# is good for RAD, easy to create windows applications, while C++, creating a Windows application using Windows API is a lot more tedious work, and slower to create.

C# is .NET and designed for windows, there is support on other OS by using Mono or Wine or something, but they won't always run perfectly, so your target OS is almost always going to be Windows.

C++ is platform independent, it can compile and run on almost everything, just make sure not to use any features that rely on the OS.
C/++ can be used to create games on the PS3/Wii if you want, and I think Xbox will only run C# if i remember correctly.

C++ is faster than C# performance wise, but these days computers are so fast there isn't much of a noticeable difference.

But for the average user, they are pretty much the same. C# has a lower learning curve though, but you are trading OS independence for ease.

D is also pretty cool, look into it. Has interfacing to C and C++ so you can use already existing C/++ APIs with D

What is RAD? And what do you mean by windows applications? Like games for the Windows OS? And I'll check out D :3
Windows applications as ... Programs.

If you are aiming at multi platform programming, C++ isn't the best either.. IMO (Every OS has its own GUI framework and you need to rewrite that...)

Just grab C#, generally its better. (Even tho I advice to learn C/C++ after)

But to learn the correct way, try not to focus on Windows Forms programming (GUI), learn by coding on the console where you actually DONT DOUBLE CLICK and half of the code is created alone.
@'Bruno @Auxilium
So then I guess I'll quit C++ for now and start up on C#, do you think thenewboston.com is a good place to start at?

Videos? I dont really like it, and like I said, starting with winform programming... meh.. (I believe he does start with that)

Idk, it gives me like a hands-on experience with it and I can actually see how everything works and understand it better. If not, do you have a better tutorial to learn through?

Get books, videos are useless.

Any suggestions for C# books?
