Trapped Source

Well I want to start my own sort of server from scrach, and Trapped's source is the oldest source that has a good base to start from, and I havent ever done private server so I don't know much, should that honestly discourage me from trying?

Use heidisql
Edit database and take off whitelist

Look in Database (HeidiSQL) Change the rank in accounts>data>Look for player ign> double click>put rank as 8 so simple.
YOu should be whitelisted.

I wouldn't say Trapped's source is the best to start of with.

I have encountered more bugs/glitches on that than any other source. I can dupe 1 ring in one go and get a whole inventory full. That easy. I would go with

- New MMOE since it is better
- I guess Creepylava if you really want to. Honestly wouldn't recommend though.

Well what would you recommend? I haven't done too much with p servers lately and I kinda wanted a whole, "Start from scratch" idea. I mean I don't wanna just download pheonix, put me and founder and make public... SO what would you recommend I do?

Creepylava is about as bare bones as you going to get with pserver source without starting a new. It is missing a lot of features that many of the other pserver sources have (guilds for one). Start with creepylava if you are confident in your ability to add in complex features to the source. Start with something more built up (perhaps MMOE?) if you have some doubts about your ability / don't have the time to build up creepylava.

I started with phoenix when I got into pservers seriously and I learned a lot from it. After running phoenix for a little while and fixing bugs here and there, I was tired of errors and lag that I could not figure out how to fix (mysql max connection errors, a server that is crippled by lag with 25+ players to name a couple). So I took what I learned from pheonix and started building up creepylava (https://github.com/rirze/rotmg_svr). Three months later, I'm still working on creepylava. Expect to spend a LOT of time on creepylava if you are going solo. If you gather a team together to work on it, make sure to get people that can actually implement features the right way (create structurally sound, efficient code that is relatively bug free).
