Are people who like movies "Saw", "Would You Rather", Sinister, VHS sadistic?

I personally enjoy watching horror films more so than any other genre (maybe with the exception of comedy but the two deliver two completely different emotional responses)

That said, what do you think makes movies that aren't particularily shocking or scary, movies that lack much of a 'theme' or 'morale' and instead are just simply absurdly violent and disgusting appealing to people? Why do you think people enjoy watching movies like Saw & Would You Rather?

By definition, isn't this sort of sadistic to some extent?

Sadism is the derivation of pleasure as a result of inflicting pain, cruelty, degradation, or humiliation, or, watching such behaviors inflicted on others.

I mean, sure, you could argue that we "know it's fake." But maybe that is just a conscious sort of perception - subconsciously, we aren't aware of it being fake per se. We still have our emotions swayed one way or another when a character dies, or feel fear when the movie's atmosphere encourages such. We still had nightmares (when we were kids...) etc...

I didn't watch any of those movies, so I'm not sure. I like some horror movies, but they aren't really scary per se, but are more creepy and sad.



And as far as I know the people who freak out at porn but not violent games,etc are soccer moms. They buy their kids the latest call of duty installment or something like that, but will freak out at porn. Probably because they don't anything about the games, and most soccer moms are hardcore christians so they will get upset at anything as sinful as porn.

That is a good point, it is probably more rapant in your culture due to the bible and by parent's fear of having "The Talk" with their kids.

IDK about you guys, but I look forward to the day I have "The Talk" with my kids, and I am going to try and make it as awkward as fuck.

LOL making it that awkward is just gonna be mean to your kids

I myself don't see a problem with children "exploring the world" if that is a correct term, but I've noticed that is not the case with a lot of other people considering I live in a pretty christian area. My parents didn't really care when I was searching for naked women on google images when I was 6 either

All because people watch violent movies doesn't mean they're sadists. There is something very different between watching Saw and a Mexican cartel beheading video. People can enjoy violent movies without being traumatized because they are kept safe by the knowledge that what they're viewing isn't real.

They didn't catch me in the act, but I was 6 and was searching on my parents computer and I left a whole bunch of history. Later my dad just told me that somebody my age shouldn't be looking at that stuff and nothing else.

I never got the talk either, probably because my parents already assumed I knew pretty much everything there is to know.

Watching scary movies isnnt sadism , I even got called a "Satanist" By an old Woman cuz of watching Harry potter :P
