Amazon return help

Did the Ebay/Amazon method and buyer returned an item cuz it was "defective". So what I am thinking of doing is buy the same item off amazon and swap it with the "defective" item and return it. What do you think about this? Honestly not sure what to do... Thanks for all the help.

Will they know that I returned a different item? They're both i7 6700K but one is defective and I'll be returning that. Will they be able to know that I swapped it?

Does it have a serial number or something else to identify? I would suggest placing the defective unit in the new box and sending it back. Anyways pretty sure amazon would do anything even if they do realise.
