I think I kind-of really superduper love you for actually giving them good information.
Personally I learnt C from making a mod using a game's SDK (Jedi Academy) with no books or internet.
From there, I learnt basic C++ when I applied for my Advanced Diploma of Professional Game Development (2 year course) which, to be honest, I hate.
A friend of mine introduced me to assembly (Fucking
BEST, you must learn this), gave me some tips and demonstrations of hooking techniques, and can now write some pretty neat code. It's just natural once you get past the learning curve!
So yeah, C -> C++ -> ASM -> OpenGL/D3D
I recommend using Visual Studio as your IDE/Compiler, IDA Pro Advanced for disassembling/debugging and HxD as a hex-editor. Very useful tools
Good luck, don't be too ambitious, and stay cool
