When item creation was made public nothing really happened (although that was partly because no one knew the item codes so all they could do was spawn gold ores and shit).

Yeah at least one person knew about item spawning and the item codes like a month after Vindictus was released. Everyone thought the guy was a GM. You can still test it out using test_give_item dev_gm_spear (not sure if this is the correct item code).
@Nico: The item codes were only made public after item spawning was patched. That's why there wasn't any need for a rollback that time, since no one could really do anything except spawn a bunch of ores.
