I haven't ever read a single book about programming (well, not practical ones, just theorical/structure/state-of-the-art stuff like SICP), I learn through prototyping, experimenting new stuff, and checking out other people's code - and I believe most programmers learn in the same way. To help other people learn to program, since it's a wonderful thing, I publish the most interesting not-private stuff I do, so they can learn from it.
People learning leads to a less retarded society, ideally.

Also it's useful since people can find bugs for you.

The stuff I publish, on GitHub for example, is mostly of little interest to the average company: they usually don't need a bunch of programmers for actually interesting stuff, they mostly want "programmers", aka web designers (note that the quotes are necessary). Who ever would pay someone to code an email server when there's the great Postfix out for free already? (well, I would, but it's a very specific case)
