In shocking footage posted to LiveLeak, more than 10 teenagers gather around a dog in a field and strap two fireworks to its flanks.

One of the group then lights the fuse and the young men, who are believed to be between 17 and 19, run to safety.

The explosion comes a moment later, in which the dog is blown apart (not shown in this edited version of the video).

The clip, filmed in El Negrito in Honduras’s Yoro province, quickly spread across social media, where outraged users called for the arrest of the group.

But animal-lovers were furious when the men were handed the equivalent of a single £60 fine and community service, local media says. After a petition on YouSignAnimals.org, the fine was raised to £95 – but the petition’s starter is still not satisfied.
