Basically just a test that's supposed to "certify" they are fluent in the language, Japanese employers and colleges look for it when considering foreigners.
It's pretty pointless though, but it's not even that hard.
Basically you have fill in the blanks for grammar, fill in the blanks for the most natural word, reading passages that are long as hell and then you gotta answer questions, revisions (finding mistakes) or whatever and Listening comprehension.
