It's part of more than that, it's just a general concept and a dumbed down explanation on what it is.
Of course you can go deep-end on everything, but why bother when the likeliness of someone actually understanding is quite slim.
To make it a bit more advanced for you then.
It's more of a philosophical belief system than anything else.
What was there before god?
The theory is that is was a incredibly dense small atom like thing that exploded and is constantly expanding due to negative energy. Eventually gravity will over power the negative energy and our universe will collapse.
That's how I remember it anyone who knows better correct me if I wrong.
Can't pass through the red plastic window.

still never answered my question. Considering the Universe collapsing part, it's still just a theory that hasn't been confirmed. Considering the atom that collapsed on itself. What caused this atom to collapse, and where did this atom come from.. It can't just come from no where!! What was there before it, and what was there when it exploded. What triggered it. And again, what was there before the universe was created..
And ofcourse it can't be someone or something since nothing existed before the big bang, since nothing did exist before that. And that's why how you'll end up answering with: God. (Prove me wrong)
Now as for the questions: Since when did God Exist.. You'll simply answer forever. But when's "forever". Our minds can't comprehend this thought. We are "programmed" that everything has a time of beginning and expiring. That's why we can't answer this question.
All in all, it's up to you to either convince yourself: Atom was there without anything (Convincing doesn't mean that you're right) or to accept that there's a God who created it.
